European Heritage Day: The Former Hospice of the Little Sisters of the Poor and its Chapel

In 1872, the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor acquired a remarkable building on the outskirts of the city, where it established a hospice ‘for the relief of the elderly and the poor who were terminally ill’, before having a chapel built there in 1889. Sold to the City in 1948, the buildings subsequently housed the charitable works of the Order of Malta and then a specialised care home (MAS). This complex has recently undergone renovation work to create housing, a retirement home and a small block of flats; a conversion that involves contemporary architectural intervention whilst respecting the heritage of the 19th and 20th centuries as much as possible.
