Although most of the huts visible today date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they bear witness to an older tradition and enduring expertise. They were used in particular for sorting, storing and preparing oysters. Their colourful facades add to the charm of the coastline and serve as a reminder of the region’s maritime heritage.

    - The Ringed Plover: Upon arriving at the Port des Barques coastline, you can spot small brown, black and white birds running in groups along the beach. As its name suggests, it searches for food (molluscs, crustaceans, marine worms) by turning over pebbles with its sturdy beak. It is a long-distance migrant that arrives on the coast of Rochefort Océan in winter after breeding in Siberia. Some may even continue on as far as Africa.

3 Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Chapel
Built in place of the small barracks where, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Sisters of Charity took in the orphans of the Rochefort Navy.
