From the sunny shores of Italy to the majestic landscapes of the Rhine, this exciting musical programme immerses us in the splendour of European romanticism. The overture to Cherubini's L'Hôtellerie portugaise displays all the energy of opera house. The evening continues with Berlioz's Herminie, a cantata of rare intensity, mixing passion, heroism and poetry. To give voice to this tormented heroine, soprano Véronique Gens, a major figure on the international opera scene, brings all the richness of her interpretation and her incomparable affinity with the French repertoire. The Symphony No. 3 ' Rhenish ' crowns this musical journey, carried by its generous breath and its luminous soundscapes. Composed in 1850, shortly after Schumann's arrival at the head of the Düsseldorf orchestra, it reflects the composer's wonder at the banks of the Rhine, the river that had fascinated him since childhood. Its fourth movement, beginning with a majestic brass chorale, draws its inspiration from the solemnity of Cologne Cathedral. At the head of the orchestra, Arie van Beek, a conductor known for the breadth of his repertoire and his artistic commitment, reveals all the dramatic force and expressive palette of these works, between passion, lyricism and orchestral grandeur.
