Pierre Loti travelled extensively throughout the Mediterranean region at a time when these countries were undergoing major transformations. Whilst he enjoyed describing the landscapes and peoples of the Mediterranean in his novels, he also shed light on the geopolitical issues facing these countries through the eyes of a traveller and sailor.
