Tout n'est pas sombre : Metal à la vie, à la mort

It's not all doom and gloom: Metal in life and death

Since its origins, the metal scene has maintained an intense dialogue with the primitive forces that run through human existence: nature, untamed and cyclical, and death, inevitable and mysterious. Far from being mere aesthetic motifs, these themes constitute a symbolic language deeply rooted in the history of the genre. Whether it is the icy landscapes of black metal, the existential reflections of thrash metal or death metal, nature and death become so many mirrors in which fears, revolts, the quest for meaning and fascination for what is beyond the human are reflected.
This exhibition explores this singular relationship: how do artists use the elements, the seasons, the decomposition or the immensity of landscapes to evoke finitude? How does metal integrate death into a rite, a metaphor or a creative force? Through visuals, words, soundscapes and testimonies, the exhibition invites us to discover an aesthetic where brutality rubs shoulders with contemplation, where darkness paradoxically opens the way to a form of recognition of the living.
Here, nature is not a setting: it is the terrain of inner confrontation. And death, far from being a taboo, becomes a way of questioning the place of human beings in the world. Together, they shape one of the most powerful and sensitive identities in metal culture.

Corentin Charbonnier has a doctorate in anthropology, following a thesis on the Hellfest metal festival. Teacher at the Centre National des Arts et Métiers and researcher for the Metal Social Club and various metal festivals in France, he is above all a committed and engaging player in the metal scene. It is part of a process of promoting metal culture, through conferences, documentaries and exhibitions. In 2024, he co-commissioned with Milan Garcin the exhibition Metal - Diabolus In Musica at the Philharmonie de Paris, the first international exhibition of this scale related to this aesthetic, in which the graphic designers Førtifem were already involved, as well as Christian Lamet of the media Hard Force.
Through the exhibition proposed in Rochefort, the ambitions, while maintaining an anthropological dimension, are multiple: to allow us to discover the diversity of this scene through the aesthetics of the musician and graphic artists (local to international artists, male and female, etc.), to include fans in the exhibition (local history, aesthetics and fan productions...) , offer a range of various artistic forms (paintings, photographs, engravings, tattoos, etc.)

The Rochefort media library is delighted and particularly proud to host this exceptional exhibition, designed and created specifically for its audiences. Through an immersion in the world of metal, she offers a sensitive and deep exploration of the links between nature and death, two founding themes of the genre.
Conceived as a real aesthetic and reflective journey, this exhibition invites us to take a new look at a culture that is often little known, where visual and sound power are mixed with a real quest for meaning. bold and deeply resonating with universal human questions.
The media library is also very proud to entrust the creation of the poster to the Førtifem, whose artistic eye enriches and extends the identity of this exhibition.
