European Heritage Days: the Théâtre de la Coupe d'Or

The Coupe d’Or’s Italian-style theatre is an integral part of the collective memory of the people of Rochefort. Founded in 1766, it has been remodelled several times over the years. The most recent renovation project, carried out between 2007 and 2012, gave it a new lease of life, enabling it to continue fulfilling its purpose whilst meeting the requirements imposed by its status as a listed building. This restoration has restored its original colours without compromising the various layers left by history. A pictorial look back at a delicate restoration project.

Adjacent to the Théâtre de la Coupe d’Or and incorporated into it as part of the renovation project, the Olympia – a former cinema featuring a ballroom – highlights the use of metal in architecture, a reminder of Rochefort’s past as a city of engineers.
An unexpected discovery of this space, a testament to the bustling life of the first half of the 20th century.
