Directed by Michel Viotte and co-written by Alain Quella-Villéger, this film draws on the writer’s words, combined with a rich collection of archive material. These documents are true treasures, rarely seen, which marked the early days of photography and travel and exploration cinema. Loti also embodies a “regional exoticism”, the result of his deep roots in the parts of France dear to him: his native Charente-Maritime, where the writer’s incredible house reopened to the public in the summer of 2025 after years of a titanic restoration project; and Brittany and the Basque Country, where he spent his final days.
