Guided tour: the spires

The ridge pole is one of the most iconic symbols of Kanak society, both past and present. This wooden carving, presented by the clan to the person it designates as chief, is fixed to the top of the community’s Grande Case. Today, the roof finial is no longer found solely atop huts: it can be seen on shop signs, in urban graffiti, and on the flag flown by certain Kanak independence movements.
