The Royal Foundries, built during the reign of Louis XIV between 1668 and 1672, are the oldest surviving facility of their kind in France. Having undergone several refurbishments, they ceased operations in 1898. Having become a derelict military-industrial site, they were given a new lease of life when the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) decided to establish its national headquarters there in 2009, following a major and determined regeneration programme.
