Virtuosity, energy and complicity: Breaking Trad brings a new breath of fresh air to traditional Irish music. Carried by three exceptional musicians, the ensemble takes the audience on a whirlwind of jigs, reels and songs where tradition dances with incredible modernity. With their new album Drive, released in 2024, Breaking Trad confirms its place among the essential bands of the current Irish scene. Accordionist Dónal Murphy, multiple All-Ireland champion, violinist David Doocey, winner of the prestigious All-Ireland Senior Fiddle and the Fiddler of Oriel trophy, as well as guitarist-singer Mike Galvin combine an impressive instrumental mastery, mixed with an irrepressible joy of playing, resolutely communicative. They have shared the path of major figures such as Four men and a dog, De Dannan, dance star Michael Flatley, Alison Krauss and Tim O'Brien. Their music, praised for its brilliance, originality and energy, makes traditional melodies vibrate with an incredible freshness. Among the many compositions on the program of this concert, there are a few Irish standards (Bucket of berries, Mist covered mountain, The Rainy day or Merry sisters of fate) and two famous songs Leaving of Liverpool and Boolavogue. The tunes follow one another, the rhythms are carried away, the bow flies away, the accordion leads the dance and the voices bring warmth and emotion. A bright, generous and festive evening, which promises to make the heart of Ireland beat in all of us.
