MAïA BAROUH [ FRANCO-JAPANESE WORLD MUSIC ]
Maïa, Pierre Barouh’s daughter, began her career as a musician at the age of 17 in the Tokyo underground scene, accompanying drag queens, burlesque dancers, strippers and singers of all styles.
At the same time, she collaborated with DJs, rock bands, Guinean musicians and griots, and, above all, with an incredible Japanese street brass band: ‘Kabocha Shokaï’.
Since then, she has gained international recognition, and the Franco-Japanese singer is now firmly established within the wider world music scene. Defying all artistic labels, her artistic world is resolutely unclassifiable.
Maïa Barouh presents a diverse and demanding repertoire based on flute and percussion improvisations, but also featuring subtle touches of electro and pop-rock elements.
Moving between traditional Japanese songs and rap, the artist oscillates between her roots and modernity.
One of her distinctive features is her superb vocal technique, drawn from an island in southern Japan, which Maïa combines with her percussive and irreverent flute playing.
Raised on her father’s music, Maïa Barouh has extensive stage experience: her volcanic energy, her humour, her whimsy, and her boundless musicality take you to the heart of her multifaceted roots, where melancholy and trance become one.
