Gaëlle Bourges likes to explore for us the major works of Western art history to better reveal their meanings and hidden treasures. After having approached cave art as well as Manet's painting, this time it is the plot of the Bayeux Tapestry that holds her attention with its episodes worthy of a great suspense series.
With 626 characters, 50 cm wide and nearly 70 m long, like an unrolled comic book, this huge eleventh-century embroidery illustrates the war of succession to the English throne between William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold the Anglo-Saxon, up to the terrible Battle of Hastings.
The choreographer transforms the textile work into a joyful creation between dance and object theatre. On stage, two performers in playsuits are armed with a panoply of cardboard cut-outs: swords, horses, longships and a royal crown. Accompanied by a mischievous voice-over, the duo creates a series of tableaux vivants in front of a canvas unrolled on the floor, thus drawing a visual epic full of twists and turns, where betrayals and bloody battles rub shoulders with the hits of the group ABBA. The medieval mandolin instrumental version of Dancing Queen is a treat!
