Stone carving course

Your tutor, Mathieu, is a sculptor and visual artist whose practice, rooted in a classical understanding of sculpture, explores the connections between humans and the forms of life that inhabit them: the animal, the plant, the instinctive. He is interested in mythologies that have been forgotten or are waiting to be reinvented, in hybridisation as a form of expression, and in our relationship with ourselves and with collective narratives.

His work takes the form of unique pieces, bespoke commissions, monumental works, and interventions on heritage restoration sites. He regularly takes part in artist residencies and international events, and collaborates with other artists to bring together different perspectives and disciplines.

In site-specific projects, he conceives of sculpture as a space for exchange, a pretext for collectively addressing the social myths of our time and creating forms to be collectively appropriated.
