    - The old Soubise ferry crossing, which once provided access to a fortified market town dominated by a mighty castle overlooking the Charente and the borders of the Saintonge Maritime region. Today, a ferry boat offers peaceful trips into the heart of the ‘Grand Site de France’ of the Charente Estuary – Rochefort Arsenal. From April to September, setting off from Soubise, cycling enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice.

    - The Charente: it is lined with extensive reed beds, an important habitat for so-called paludicolous bird species (from the Latin paludicola, composed of palus ‘marsh’ and colo ‘to inhabit’). Here you can find the Common Reed Warbler, the Reed Bunting and the Sedge Warbler. The latter is very secretive and commonly hides amongst the reeds. At the start of the breeding season, the males begin to build a distinctive and highly elaborate nest by weaving together plants and threads from spider’s webs, thus ensuring a very sturdy structure.
