The exhibition journey begins by exploring these foundational objects of collective memory, which convey shared images. Sculptures, medals, photographs, drawings and postcards offer a glimpse into an era and reflect the desire to honour a man and his dual career—as both writer and naval officer.
All works on display come from the collections of the Musée national de la Marine, and some have been specially restored for the occasion.

The exhibition continues through four thematic stopovers, set within the museum’s permanent galleries. Each stop invites visitors to revisit an object or space from the museum's collection, reinterpreted through the perspective of Julien Viaud, better known as Pierre Loti.
On Monday 30 June, 21 July and 15 September at 3pm, the museum invites you to a special 45-minute meeting with the exhibition curator. This privileged moment will offer behind-the-scenes insights—from the first ideas to the final realisation.
From 19 May to 23 June, the Musée national de la Marine takes up residence in the Maison de la Charente-Maritime in La Rochelle, offering a dive into the maritime and military career of Pierre Loti. Free entry.
From 13 to 15 June 2025, the museum will take part in the second edition of the “Un week-end bien Loti” festival, offering free flash tours of the exhibition on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 June at 2pm and 4pm.
Starting 5 July, a brand new escape game will be available at the Old Naval Medical School in Rochefort. Follow in the footsteps of Gustave Viaud, Julien’s elder brother, trained in Rochefort as a naval surgeon. A thrilling investigation tracing the journey of these two brothers, united by the sea.
