Kinotayo, established in 2006, is the first contemporary Japanese film festival in France. Supported by various public and private institutions — including the Embassy of Japan in France and the Maison de la Culture du Japon in Paris — this festival is part of the privileged cultural dialogue that has linked France and Japan since the second half of the 19th century.
Each year, from among some 200 films produced in Japan over the previous 18 months, the festival selects around ten feature films. It handles their translation, subtitling, and post-production to introduce French audiences to the richness and diversity of Japanese cinema. Without Kinotayo, these films would not be screened in France.
The films selected for this 18th edition explore a wide range of themes, from contemporary social pressures to the lingering trauma of war, while also offering powerful narratives that celebrate the healing power of friendship. The film Bakin & Hokusai transports us to 19th-century Japan, following the country’s most acclaimed novelist and its most renowned painter.
Programme: 7 films will be screened from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 June. On Friday: Évaporés at 6 p.m., followed by Shall We Dance at 9 p.m. On Saturday: September 1923 at 3 p.m., Super Happy For Ever at 6 p.m., and The Ginza Pianist at 9 p.m. On Sunday: Bakin & Hokusai at 6 p.m. and Ann at 9 p.m.
Also featured: Free demonstrations of Kendo and Chanbara on the Casino terrace, along with an exhibition of 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints.
