In 1690, at the suggestion of Michel Bégon, Intendant of the Navy, Charles Plumier, a Minime monk and botanist, discovered and described dozens of plants during a trip to the West Indies, including six small herbaceous plants, which he named Begonia in honour of the Intendant.
Three centuries later, Begonia is the fifth largest genus in the plant kingdom: more than 2,200 species from four continents, from sea level to the Himalayas, and nearly 20,000 hybrids.
