The author:
Witi Tame Ihimaera is an English-speaking Maori writer and former diplomat.
He is the first Maori novelist to be published and is now recognised as a major author of postcolonial and indigenous literature. He has written for theatre and cinema, co-produced films and documentaries, edited several books on New Zealand cultures and taught at the University of Auckland. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including being made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France in 2017.
