Meeting with Luca Brunoni

Writer and screenwriter Luca Brunoni was born in Lugano in Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. He now teaches in Neuchâtel, in French-speaking Switzerland. After writing three books in Italian, he chose to write in French.

En surface, published in 2025 by Finitude, has been selected for the Prix des Lecteurs des Littératures Européennes. In it, Luca Brunoni describes the awakening of a sleeping woman, Leila, who lived ‘on the surface’. Can a mother hand her son over to the authorities? This question has been gnawing at Leila ever since she suspected Alex of being involved in an accident that caused the death of a young man. To take stock of the situation, she chooses to flee, far from her son's lies, her husband's violence and a suffocating life that prevents her from thinking clearly. She finds refuge in a small tourist resort where she befriends other lonely souls who have ended up there out of season. Each in their own way encourages her to take control of her life. Like a stone thrown into water creating concentric circles, her rebirth will have repercussions on everyone around her.
