New circus: The weight of things

  • In a series of twenty paintings that explore the theme of weight in all its possible metaphors, objects appear alive, autonomous, disproportionately heavy or incredibly light, while bodies seem to defy the basic laws of physics. A man is buffeted by flying chairs, while a weightlifter is unable to put down his barbell and another juggles eighteen-kilo cast iron loaves! In the world of Camille Boitel and Sève Bernard, reality becomes questionable before our astonished eyes.

In a series of twenty paintings that explore the theme of weight in all its possible metaphors, objects appear alive, autonomous, disproportionately heavy or incredibly light, while bodies seem to defy the basic laws of physics. A man is buffeted by flying chairs, while a weightlifter is unable to put down his barbell and another juggles eighteen-kilo cast iron loaves! In the world of Camille Boitel and Sève Bernard, reality becomes questionable before our astonished eyes.

A subtle patchwork of object manipulation, magic effects, mime and breathtaking levitation, the show defies gravity in every sense of the word, playing with words as well as matter. It opens the doors to a wonderful world that challenges our certainties and mischievously raises universal existential questions.

Camille Boitel and Sève Bernard have many talents: they are acrobats, dancers, actors and musicians. From show to show, they invent a universe that defies classification. The weight of our worries evaporates on contact with a tender fantasy. Gravity is nothing more than a distant memory, and vertigo is replaced by wonder.
