PRESENTATION OF RENAUD MONFOURNY
Born in 1962 in Reims, Renaud Monfourny began his photography career as a teenager in a photo club in Soissons, then continued his studies in this field at the Institut Communal des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels in Liège. At the same time, he taught himself the history of art and photography.
Back in France, Renaud Montfourny settled in Paris where he taught at the Paris-Conflans School of Architecture. At just 21 years old, the same age as many of his students, he founded several magazines, including "Les Inrockuptibles." From this period, he retains as his greatest pride the capture (and publication) of an intimate conversation between François Mitterrand and Marguerite Duras at La Cité des 4000 in La Courneuve.
A few years later, he took charge of the photographic editorial line for "Les Inrocks" and since then has tirelessly reflected cultural news by photographing emerging and established artists, with over 2,200 photos published to date. Necessity dictates that he captures his moments digitally and in color but continues his work in black and white.
Jean-Luc Godard, Björk, Serge Gainsbourg, Pierre Soulages, Leonard Cohen, Tim Burton, Maurice Pialat, Woody Allen, Lou Reed, Clint Eastwood, Patti Smith, Kurt Cobain, Paul Auster, Gilbert and George, Morrissey, Marguerite Duras, Gerhard Richter, Catherine Deneuve, Michel Houellebecq, Quentin Tarantino, Neil Young, Isabella Rossellini—the list is endless, but he affirms that the pleasure of encounters is always renewed.
His photographs have been used for numerous book and record covers. His works are also exhibited by private collectors in France and abroad.
