Gustave, René and Fernand, three veterans still in their prime, defend their last bastion against the intrusion of the other residents of the retirement home where they are spending their twilight years with the same fervour they once showed against the enemy. Gustave is the loudmouth of the trio. Having been there for six months, he doesn't speak to anyone except his two companions and grumbles about everything. René ‘was born enthusiastic. And when he dies, he'll be an enthusiastic corpse’! Fernand, disabled by a piece of shrapnel lodged in his skull, is obsessed with birthdays... They are intrigued by the wind shaking the poplar trees on the hill opposite... why not escape to the hill with the poplar trees?
