The most recent of Rochefort's temples, with its very sober architecture, is home to several lodges and obediences, including the historic ‘La Démocratie’ (of the Grand Orient de France), founded on 8 March 1904 and home to many of Rochefort's leading figures. Since the end of the 18th century, Rochefort, a major French war port, has been the cradle of a fertile Freemasonry movement, which has also been involved in local life, helping arsenal workers, orphans and disadvantaged people in particular.
Founded in 1773, the Grand Orient de France is the oldest and largest Masonic obedience in continental Europe. Today, it has over 60,000 members in more than 1,300 lodges and offers a humanist, initiatory and fraternal path.
Enter the Masonic temple in rue des Coquelicots and discover Freemasonry through its architecture and symbols. You'll have the chance to talk to Freemasons about the symbols and their commitment.
This visit will also be an opportunity to discover the major French obediences, such as the Grand Orient de France, the Grande Loge Féminine de France and the Grande Loge Mixte Universelle, as well as to talk to Freemasons who will explain how Freemasonry brings people together and fosters human links.
