By the coastal footpath, discover the special atmosphere of this walk between military heritage and remarkable landscapes.
At the mouth of the Charente river, a special atmosphere wins the visitor. Accomplice of nature, its whims and its wealth, the marsh of Soumard was and still is a place of lusts and control by man.
Built from 1672, on the right bank of the Charente, Fort Vasou could accommodate several hundred men and about fifty cannons. In 1757, the fort was damaged by the English. Remodelled after this battle, it incorporates a semi-circular battery with a diameter of about 130m, to which a barracks and a shell storage facility have been added. Decommissioned by the army and sold to a private individual in 1950, it is listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments.
