With this new creation, artist and director Thomas Guérineau, a specialist in musical juggling, wanted to explore African musicality from an original and iconoclastic angle, by collaborating, under the aegis of the Africolor Festival and the Institut français de Bamako, with the Compagnie Nama, which brings together musicians, singers... and women basketball players.
Between bouncing on the floor and hitting the ball with their hands, the performers are offered an infinite range of rhythms. More than a song, it's a real dance, embodied by the players whose bodies are extended by the trajectories of the balls. Movement, the manipulation of objects and sound blend together in an unexpectedly harmonious way. Basketteuses de Bamako plays with this, with traditional Malian dance and song, mixed with improvisation and vocal percussion.
In just a few scenes, these six artists-sportswomen-singers create a show that's fun, explosive and bouncy! Basketballs become musical and juggling instruments. And the precise gestures matched to the rhythmic pulse and the voice give us a unique musical juggling experience. By combining practices that might seem far apart, this show creates a new genre: Malian musical basketball. Enchanting!
