Gilles Leimdorfer has been working for many years on France and its popular myths. Fascinated by the film "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort", he has travelled several times to Rochefort to find ways of paying tribute to Jacques Demy without falling into the cliché of the past.

In recent years, young women from Rochefort and the surrounding area have been inspired by another American film, Drew Barrymore's "Bliss", to set up a "Roller Derby" team in the town, a women's contact sport on roller skates very much inspired by punk, feminist and LGBT culture.
It was from them that Gilles Leimdorfer found new "demoiselles de Rochefort". He set out to paint a portrait of them and of the city today.
This exhibition is a contemporary and lively echo of Jacques Demy's film "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort" and revisits the myth. This group of women gathered around this combat sport tells the same story of self-assertion and pride, like the characters of Solange and Delphine Garnier, who two generations ago sought to emancipate themselves and live their lives as women.
