Reading Night at the SHD

To mark the 10th Nuits de la Lecture (Nights of Reading) event, the Historical Service of the Ministry of Defence in Rochefort is offering a guided tour of the exhibition dedicated to the comic book L’Oubliée du Radeau de La Méduse (The Forgotten Woman of the Raft of the Medusa) by Gilles Cazaux and Thierry Soufflard.
Inspired by real events and Géricault's famous painting exhibited at the Louvre in 1819, the album recounts the epic story of the survivors of the frigate La Méduse, which left Rochefort on 17 June 1816 and ran aground on the Banc d'Arguin on 2 July. Focusing on the real or supposed female figure of a canteen worker, it examines a dramatic episode in history that has inspired numerous stories. The exhibition brings together some sixty original plates and drawings, combined with numerous 19th-century archive and library documents, showing that there is no history without sources.
