The 11th Trizay medieval festival

For the 11th edition of the Rencontres Médiévales, the theme ‘From Romanesque to Gothic?’ invites us to move beyond the often oversimplified stylistic categories. Although these concepts have long been used to describe the architecture and arts of the Middle Ages, they nevertheless obscure the diversity and richness of creative forms.

The papers to be presented on 30 May thus open up a discussion based on concrete observations set within their historical context. The focus is on the late 12th century, a pivotal period often described as a ‘transition’, at a time when the Duchy of Aquitaine was under the authority of the Plantagenets.

Through this series of lectures, researchers and specialists invite the public to take a fresh look at this era and to gain a better understanding of the artistic and cultural developments that shaped the Middle Ages.

The scientific director is Christian Gensbeitel (Senior Lecturer in Medieval Art History).
