Don DeLillo is certainly one of the most influential and talked-about contemporary American writers of his generation. With the biting irony and mystical lyricism that characterise his prose, his works regularly denounce the violence of history and that of his country.
Like the character in Notre-Dame de Paris, Don DeLillo's Esmeralda lives in a court of miracles populated by artists and hoodlums. In this New York district, two nuns, Sister Edgar and Sister Gracie, try to find the missing orphan, by befriending Ismael, the gang leader and caretaker of the place... Here the author pairs the jungle of the Bronx with that of Rudyard Kipling (Esmeralda Lopez has the elusive silhouette of a sister of Mowgli who grew up in a car graveyard).
In one of the most moving stories of his entire oeuvre, crystallised in the form of a short novella, Don DeLillo shows all the love and compassion he feels for America and its multiracial and multicultural populations.
With L'Ange Esmeralda, the Cornerstone collective offers a total spectacle, borrowing its aesthetic from cinema, music and literature to better reveal the muted violence that permeates our daily lives.
