    Joseph Vernet's series of views of French ports, painted between 1753 and 1765, was the result of a royal commission, the most ambitious of Louis XV's reign. Its aim was to illustrate the diversity of the country's maritime activities, and to show that the port cities were the scene of flourishing trade, shipbuilding and armament, marking the renaissance of the Royal Navy under Louis XV.
