One hundred years ago, on 10 June 1923, Pierre Loti, naval officer and writer, died. To mark this centenary, the City of Rochefort is offering a dedicated scientific and cultural programme throughout 2023 at a number of venues in the area. At its two sites in Rochefort, the Musée National de la Marine is presenting a double temporary exhibition looking back at the strong bond between Loti and his brother Gustave, both of whom were united by the sea and a maritime career.

The life and military career of Pierre Loti are presented in chronological and thematic sections on the site of the Rochefort Arsenal. Portraits taken at different times in his life are displayed alongside the ships on which he carried out his various missions as a naval officer. This journey also provides an opportunity to explore the technical changes taking place in the navy in the 19th century, and more specifically those taking place in the Rochefort Arsenal at the same time as the writer and traveller was born.
