Les Gros patinent bien is a "cardboard cabaret" that has been a hit all over France since 2020, and won the Molière for best public theatre show in 2022.
Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan, creators and performers of this hilarious epic, combine the spirit of Monty Python with the burlesque of clowns. Their unshakeable belief in theatre accessible to all is embodied here in a cabaret show of demonic virtuosity.
In this Laurel and Hardy-style duet, the former plays a wiry Zébulon, a mute assistant in charge of the story's vibrant, cartoonish stage management. Hardy, riveted to his stool, recounts his adventures in yoghurt-style Shakespearean English, clad in a generously dressed three-piece suit.
Criss-crossing Europe by motorbike, plane, scooter and mule, the narrator and his zealous prop-master share an improbable and thrilling road-trip. From Pamplona to Perros-Guirec, from a Norwegian fjord to a Vendée landscape, their incredible round-the-world trip thwarts all the pitfalls, including the curse of a mermaid caught by mistake!
All it takes is a few pieces of cardboard to make us imagine the landscapes they've travelled through, and the storyteller's delightful volapük to keep the suspense going right to the end. And the burlesque remains grandiose right to the end!
