When twenty-six-year-old Barthélémy receives a summons from the guardianship judge, he wonders what he has done. When he discovers that he has a half-brother and two half-sisters and must be their guardian, his world falls apart. And when illness suddenly strikes, the eldest Morlevent gradually transforms into the head of the family. And we're taken from laughter to tears.
Performing alone on stage, Barthélémy is both narrator and manipulator, using a variety of everyday objects to tell his story. A wardrobe full of memories, a Barbie doll and a duck in a tumble draw the family's funny and touching adventures. Barthélémy's eternally carefree personality, his clumsiness and his absolute capacity for derision hide his childhood wounds, but are also a formidable weapon for distancing himself and reminding us that this is theatre.
In this deeply moving story, Olivier Letellier tackles the delicate subjects of family ties, adoption and illness with force and humour, underpinned by questions of normality and the quest for origins. Winner of the Molière for Best Young Audience Show in 2010, this adaptation of Marie-Aude Murail's novel, which has the feel of a modern tale, has been an undeniable success.
