Theatre : The art of laughter

Cultural ,  Theatre in Rochefort
  • A table, two chairs, a carafe of water, Jos Houben is the only person on stage to lead a scientific-burlesque conference of a special kind. A meticulous observer of our daily lives, he analyses all types of laughter: clear, frank, massive, pinched, false, cynical or mocking... He dissects the causes and effects, and above all explains to us the workings of this precision mechanism.

A table, two chairs, a carafe of water, Jos Houben is the only person on stage to lead a scientific-burlesque conference of a special kind. A meticulous observer of our daily lives, he analyses all types of laughter: clear, frank, massive, pinched, false, cynical or mocking... He dissects the causes and effects, and above all explains to us the workings of this precision mechanism.

Using body language, he examines the mimics, gestures and attitudes of laughter, illustrating them with irresistible examples, from a baby's first steps to the fall of a waiter in a restaurant, from the imitation of a chicken to that of an overdone camembert! Everything becomes a subject for his brilliant demonstrations and his deft left-handedness. And from the top of his six-foot height, this great energetic man has nothing to envy to Keaton or Chaplin.

Actor, clown, mime and comedian, Jos Houben teaches his art in Paris at the École Jacques-Lecoq. He has been an actor for theatre and television, a fellow traveller with Peter Brook, and now travels the world dispensing his science of the zygomatic. Skilled in uncovering the elusive, with remarkable finesse, this clown educator makes his laughter a great art!
