This year's festival, directed by Victor Sicard, explores the close links between French music and that of the Americas. The former has influenced music from all over the world, while itself being enriched by these other cultures. The Trio Hélios, featuring a violinist, a cellist and a pianist, takes us on a wild musical adventure from New York to Buenos Aires. As for the remarkable actor Denis Podalydès, he gives voice to Pierre Loti through various extracts from his works, recounting his incredible peregrinations around the world.
This seductive programme opens with a trio by Amy Beach, whose career took a decisive turn when, at the end of a European tour in 1914, she returned to the United States steeped in Western European music, particularly French Impressionism. At the same time, Maurice Ravel completed his famous Trio in A minor in 1914. A veritable masterpiece of French chamber music, it also bears the hallmarks of a variety of inspirations, from the oscillating Basque rhythms so dear to Ravel's childhood memories to the orientalism still in vogue.
The great Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla was a great admirer of Ravel. His melodies, brimming with passion and romanticism, have been arranged for the trio, accompanied by a bandoneon played by William Sabatier, a specialist in this emblematic tango instrument, and Victor Sicard, a baritone.
